The film is based on the eponymous novel by American writer Philip Roth of the same name.

The picture tells the story of an exemplary American - law-abiding citizens, loving husband and caring father, an entrepreneur working in his small factory, which he inherited after his father's death. The likes of him keep the American society in tact. The 60's come, and the ideal life begins to crumble when a beloved daughter escapes from the house, embarking on the path of political terror. The director of the drama is the renowned Scottish actor Ewan McGregor, who also performed the leading role in the film.
